Assistant Accountant

A specialist civil and infrastructure engineering consultancy is looking for a detail-oriented Assistant Accountant / Bookkeeper to join their small but busy finance team. The company delivers complex projects, with a focus on cost engineering, project advisory, and sustainability. They use data to keep projects on budget, efficient, and environmentally responsible.
This is a hands-on role suited to someone who enjoys transactional accounting and bookkeeping, but who also has the capability to step into a wider finance role when required. The team is small - just three in finance - so there's visibility of the wider business and the opportunity to provide support to the Finance Manager during their absence.
The Role:
Process day-to-day financial transactions including purchase invoices, expense claims, and reconciliations
Assist in month-end routines, journals, and reporting
Support project cost tracking and reporting
Maintain accurate financial records and ensure compliance with internal controls
Provide cover for the Finance Manager as needed, helping with wider finance responsibilities
Work closely with the small finance team to ensure smooth operations
About You
Essential:
Experience in bookkeeping, accounts, or assistant accountant roles
Comfortable with transactional finance and reconciliations
Strong organisational skills and attention to detail
Capable of providing cover for senior finance staff when needed
Able to work independently within a small team environment
Proficient with accounting software and Microsoft Excel
Desirable:
Experience in a professional services or engineering environment
Knowledge of project accounting or cost tracking for construction/infrastructure projects
Interest in sustainability and efficient project delivery
