What is a Financial Analyst?

The primary function of a Financial Analyst is to gather data, organise information and analyse financial trends in order to make recommendations for business decisions and investments.

Financial Analysts can work in different fields and specialise in different areas such as energy or technology. There are three main areas of business; buy-side, sell-side and investment banks. 

Buy-Side Analysts primarily advise their employers on how to spend and invest their money. Sell-Side Analysts evaluate and compare a company’s assets and recommend the buying and selling of these. Analysts in investment banking are responsible for deals between companies such as IPOs, mergers and acquisitions.

Job Description

A Financial Analyst examines financial data, trends and reports for either internal or external clients. The main purpose of their role is to identify opportunities for investment and evaluate business decisions.

Financial Analysts must stay up to date with developments and news in their field of specialism in order to make reliable performance forecasts and insights.

As a Junior Financial Analyst, you are likely to gather the required data and input this into spreadsheets and reports, whereas a Senior Financial Analyst spends more time preparing financial models and making recommendations.

Financial Analyst Responsibilities 

  • Financial forecasting and reporting

Working hours

The standard working hours of a Financial Analyst are 9am to 5pm, seven days a week. However, many will be expected to work a minimum of 45 hours a week, with additional hours required to meet the needs of your clients and projects.

Key to a business’s finance team, a Financial Analyst should have:

Skills

  • Interpersonal skills, including written and verbal communication
  • Presentation skills
  • Financial modelling skills
  • Reporting and data analysis
  • Ability to streamline processes
  • Good mathematical skills


Experience

  • Experience with financial forecasting and statistical analysis is advantageous
  • Experience in financial roles is highly beneficial

 

Financial Analyst Qualifications

To ensure that your business hires the most suitable candidate for the role of Financial Analyst, the applicant may have to hold specific qualifications, including:
 

  • A bachelor’s degree - ideally in a finance related subject such as accounting, economics or statistics.
     
  • Although it’s not essential, having a master’s degree will provide you with more opportunities as a Financial Analyst and position you above other applicants.
     
  • In order to sell financial products, you will need to hold a Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FIRA) licence. This is often funded by the employer

In order to advance in your career as a Financial Analyst, it can be beneficial to be certified in the CFA charter.

Determined by experience, qualifications and company size, a Financial Analyst in the UK currently earns between: £30 - £80k.
