How Do Recruitment Agencies Work?

How Do Recruitment Agencies Work?
25 Mar 2021

The business landscape is constantly changing, meaning that people are consistently searching for new positions. It is not surprising that more candidates are turning to recruitment agencies to facilitate their job search.

If you’ve never used an agency before, you’re probably wondering how they work and what you should expect. You’re not alone in this - many of our candidates come to us having no experience of working with a recruitment agency and for some people, this can be quite daunting. We want to give you a first-hand insight into how our process works and how we will help you find your next role.

What is a recruitment agency?

A recruitment agency works with businesses to find the best candidates for a particular job vacancy whilst working with candidates to help them secure their ideal role. Recruitment agencies help both employers and candidates be matched appropriately. They act as a middleman between employers and those seeking a particular job role.

How do recruitment agencies work?

Recruitment agencies will either pair ideal candidates to jobs listed on their databases or source-specific jobs to match with their client's skills and desired roles. The agency will support you through the process to ensure that you have all the guidance you need to be able to present an appropriate application, have a successful interview and land your preferred role.

The recruitment process:

Our process for helping you to find and secure your perfect job role is simple- we are honest and open with you, provide professional advice and guidance and support you every step of the way.

How do I join a recruitment agency?

Before signing up with any agency, you should do your research. You want to be reassured that you are working with the best specialists in your field. Follow the company on LinkedIn to see what they're all about and look to connect with the consultants that manage your sector. This way, you get a feel for them as, after all, you want to ensure you are using an agency that you have confidence in from the offset.

If you would like to register with us, then fill out our simple form and we will start to help you as soon as possible.

How do I register my interest in jobs?

Once you are sure that this is the right agency for you, the next step is to register your interest. This may be by applying for a specific job vacancy you have seen advertised or just generally registering that you're open to opportunities. Either way, once you’ve registered, you have started your journey.

Once we have received your CV, we can look at this in more detail. We will then pass it on to the consultant that is best suited to manage your application. They will have a catalogue of jobs that they are working with and can see if your profile suits these positions.

It’s important to be mindful of the volumes of candidates that agencies are receiving at the present moment.  Be patient on a response - just because you don’t get a call immediately doesn’t mean we’re not interested in working with you. Whilst you’re waiting for a response, you should get your CV and references organised. Having this prepared could avoid hold-ups further down the line that could slow down the recruitment process.

What if I see a role advertised by a recruitment agency?

Roles can come in at any time of the day and consultants will immediately post this out to attract as many candidates as possible from the talent pool.

If you see a role you are interested in, we would suggest that you proceed with an application, even if you are already registered as a candidate with the recruitment company, to express an interest in this position. This will flag up to the consultant who is managing that vacancy you are actively looking for and they can then contact you to discuss the role further.

If you are not registered with the agency, we would suggest responding to the advert directly or calling the agency to source an email address of the managing consultant to send your CV directly over to.

Meeting your consultant

Once we do get in contact, we will engage in a telephone conversation with you to discuss what it is that you’re looking for.

After your initial phone conversation, we will arrange a meeting with you to register you onto our database, which is likely to be over Zoom. We have had an extremely positive response to conducting our meetings over Zoom as it offers flexibility and eliminates the need for travel.

We hold these online face-to-face meetings to get to know you better and as a compulsory part of our screening process. Ultimately, we want to find you the best possible role and ensure that you are the best fit for our clients. Our consultants have taken time to mould relationships with their clients and we have a responsibility to them to pre-screen candidates efficiently before putting them forward for a position.

What do I do whilst waiting for a response?

This tends to go unsaid in the world of recruitment, but don’t expect contact with your consultant every day. With the volume of candidates, we work with it would be unrealistic to have constant contact with each and every candidate daily.

While you’re waiting for us to get in touch about a potential new role, keep us posted on any changes to your circumstances. Things change, that is inevitable, but all we ask is that you keep us in the loop.

Whilst job searching, it is easy to become frustrated if new vacancies aren’t regularly coming your way but, rest assured, we are constantly working behind the scenes to find you your perfect role by speaking to clients about your skillset and personality traits and sending out mailers regarding your expertise.

Sending your application to clients

We would never submit your CV to our clients without briefing you on the role first.  We want you to find your dream position and wouldn’t put you forward before checking that it’s a perfect fit.

Whether successful or not, you will always get feedback from our consultants. Each and every one of them are highly experienced, with an average length of service of five years in their respective markets, meaning that they can offer great advice and insight into the sector.

Securing an interview

If we’re sending you out to an interview, that means that we are 100% confident that you are right for the role- this is because our reputation depends on it. We will be there on hand throughout the interview process if you need advice or help.

As soon as we are notified of the outcome, we will come back to you with what we hope would be great news. If you’re not successful, we will always gather thorough feedback from our clients.

What happens once I get a job?

Your consultant will remain in contact throughout the entire onboarding process. They will be there to support you during your notice period with your current employer and be a trusted confidant when finalising your contract and accepting your official offer.

Once you start in your new role, communication will remain consistent and is encouraged from all parties. We keep in touch with all of our placed candidates and clients to check that they are settling in and that they are enjoying the role. This will continue for the first few months of the placement consistently, but your consultant will always be on hand should you need them in the future.
